Koh Chang's Beaches
Almost unknown until thirty years ago, in the last decades Koh Chang has become a major tourist destination in Thailand, both for foreigners and for Thai people, thanks to its beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. With the exception of Long Beach and Wai Chek Beach, Koh Chang's beaches are located along its western coast, separated by lush hills and headlands. Had Sai Khao, more known as White Sand Beach and Had Khlong Phrao are the most renowned beaches on the island, those that have had the greatest tourist development with the construction of numerous medium and high class village resorts, restaurants, shops and services. Had Kai Bae, Had Thanam, better known as Lonely Beach, Had Bai Lan and Had Bang Bao are the other most popular beaches on the island. Behind and along these beaches the development is mostly directed towards backpacker’s tourists with several cheap accommodation ranging from spartan bungalows to convenient guest houses. Koh Chang's beaches are all easily accessible by means of transport at your disposal, car or scooter, in fact they are all located along the coastal road and easily visible. If you do not have your own transportation you can use the shared songthaews, which run uninterruptedly along the west coast. Koh Chang is connected to mainland with regular ferry services throughout the year. Two ferry companies operate service to Koh Chang. The Ferry Koh Chang leaves from Thammachat Pier with daily departure every 45 minutes from 06:30 to 19:00. The Centrepoint Ferry leaves from Centrepoint Pier with daily departure every hour from 06:00 to 19:00. Both piers are located 5 km from Laem Ngop village, about 35 km from Trat. Ticket prices are similar: 80 THB for a single journey, 100 to 120 THB for a car, 30 to 40 THB for a motorbike. Journey times are between 30 and 45 minutes, because ships dock into island in two different places. Ferry Koh Chang has the shortest crossing and docks to Ao Sapporot Pier, in the northern tip of the island, instead Centrepoint Ferry docks at its Dan Kao Pier, a couple of kilometres to the south east. During high season Koh Chang is connected to Koh Mak, Koh Kood and Koh Wai by other ferry services which leave from Bang Bao and Kai Bae. The shore is not sandy, but composed of small rounded pebbles with rock outcrops at either end, the only sand strips were artificially created by two resorts. Unlike most beaches in Koh Chang, the reef is very close and rich of marine life and corals. The accommodations are limited to some bungalow-style resorts located on the beach or next to the road, all are within the lower price range,as well as the restaurants.Read More
Klong Son Bay & Chang Noi Beach
Klong Son is the first village you across on the west coast after the Ao Sapparot Pier. In the center of this small town there is a crossroad leading to Klong Son Bay. The bay is characterized by a beautiful sand beach and a pier that is home to a small community of fishermen. Close to the pier there is a beautiful chedi, where fishermen offer prayers and offerings propitiatory. Chang Noi Beach, about one km long, is privately owned beach of Aiyapura Resort & Spa and Siam Royal View, a real estate company owner of the project for the development of tourism in the area. The depth of the water in the bay is very low, at low tide you have to walk a few hundred meters to get deep enough for swimming. It is not suitable for swimming due to the muddy bottom, but it is a good area to snorkel a little further from the shore. Located on the southern part of the bay, Aiyapura is a beautiful resort with one of the best Spa in island. For exclusive guests were created two small artificial beaches, which allow a comfortable and exclusive bathing.Read More
