Lamai Beach

Located in the middle of eastern coast, Lamai Beach is Samui's second most popular beach. With a length just over 3 km, it is smaller but more relaxing than Chaweng Beach placed a few kilometers north. The white and fine sandy beach is set in a beautiful half-moon shaped bay surrounded by tall coconut trees and is dotted with huge polished granite stones, particularly at both end edges. Just at south edge lie the two famous granite rocks named Hin Ta and Hin Yai, resembling the male and female genitalia, while to the north is set Tong Takian, a rocky promontory covered by a vast green and lush jungle. Until a few decades ago, Lamai was the preferred destination for backpackers, with a few budget accommodations, in recent years there have been built several luxury resorts, numerous bars and restaurants, yet the beach has remained quiet and pleasant. The area of beach close to north headland is more rocky and less developed. Especially at low tide the water is shallow, yet allows swimming and is suitable for families with children. The central and southern part of Lamai Beach are the finest, although a bit more crowded are suitable for a relaxing day under the tropical sun. Thanks to the deeper waters, you can enjoy various water activities like jet-skiing, kayaking, windsurfing and water skiing. As well as in Chaweng, late in the afternoon the resorts and restaurants overlooking the sea place low tables and cushions on the sand, where you can enjoy a cocktail or a seafood dinner by candlelight, perhaps with a beautiful sunset that makes the atmosphere even more romantic. Lamai offers a great selection of hotel accommodations with good value for money. Most of high-class hotels and resorts are located facing the central and southern part of beach, while the area to the north offers more affordable hotels. The cheapest accommodations are located in the Lamai village, just 100 meters behind the beach, where are also several shops, pharmacies, banks, mini markets, malls, spas and restaurants.
