Khlong Hae Floating Market in Hat Yai is the first floating market opened in the extreme south of Thailand. The market is held on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays along the banks of a large canal facing the Wat Khlong Hae, a beautiful Buddhist temple situated 4 km north of downtown, right on the way to Songkhla. Opened since August 2008, the floating market is born from an idea of the ex-village headman. Nowadays, the market has been developed in every aspect as more tourists visit here unceasingly. The atmosphere is quite different from the other floating markets in Thailand as the vendors wear hijab because most of local people are Muslims. About a hundred of vendors pack their wares onto small boats and jostle with each other for the attention of buyers alongside the canal. The products for sale are the usual suspects like handicrafts, household items, clothing, t-shirts, souvenirs and of course a lot of street food. This area of the Thailand has a large presence of practicing Muslims consequently the pig is not usually included in the menu offered, and other meats are mostly Halal. Visitors can enjoy the Khanon Mod, fried rice balls rolled in bean paste, or Khao Yam a rice salad in southern style. On small charcoal barbecues, sellers cook large shrimp, squid, fish and chicken satay, while many others sell Kao Phad Talè, Phad Tai and Phad Si-Io. All the food is cooked with traditional recipes of Southern Thailand and it is very cheap. Khlong Hae Floating Market also has a campaign for the environment as the sellers use bamboo tubes, coconut shells and clay pots instead of using plastic bags or foam boxes.
Opening days: Khlong Hae Floating Market is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, including Songkran's day, when many Malaysians arrive in Hat Yai to enjoy the popular Thai festival.
