Koh Tao Boats & Ferries
Koh Tao is a small island off the west coast of the Gulf of Siam in front of Surat Thani Province, of which is part politically, and the Chumphon Province. Almost unknown until a few decades ago, the island was an important breeding ground for hawksbill and green turtles, in fact its Thai name means "Turtle Island". Discovered by tourism in the late 80s, Koh Tao is nowadays one of the favorite destinations of Thailand's tourists and a real paradise for divers and snorkelers, as it is home to some of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. Located 70 km north of Koh Samui, the small island do not have its own airport, accordingly to reach Koh Tao from Bangkok or from other Thai cities you can choose between two travel options, one that involves the use of aircraft until Samu to approach, and one more economical which provides the use of the buses or train until Chumphon or Surat Thani, in both options plus the ferries, of course. Koh Tao is connected to mainland with ferry and speedboat services throughout the year. All boats arrive and leave from Mae Haad Pier in Baan Mae Haad, the island's main village located on the west cost. The nearest access to Koh Tao from Bangkok is Chumphon located 479 Km south of capital. From its piers depart all ferry and speedboat to Koh Tao. The ferries depart from Chumphon Ferry Pier located along the Tha Thapat River in Tambon Tha Yang, 10 Km south of city centre. The fast boats of Songserm leave from Mataphone Pier in Pak Nam 3 km further south, just at the mouth of river, while Lomprayah's catamarans leave from its owned Thung Makham Noi Pier in Hat Sai Ri, 27 Km south of of Chumphon centre. All speed boats operate the same route, moor first at Mae Haad Pier in Koh Tao and then continue the journey to Thong Sala Pier in Koh Pha Ngan and Nathon Pier or Pralan Pier in Samui, instead the ferries end their route to Mae Haad Pier. The fast boat trip to Koh Tao takes about two hours, while the ferry trip takes six hours. For tourists staying in Southern Thailand the most affordable and practical way to get to Koh Tao, but also Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan, are the fast ferries that depart from the Don Sak Pier located along the coast of Don Sak District, 60 km east of Surat Thani centre and about 95 km from its airport. Ferries carry only passengers, no bikes or cars, the boat trip to Koh Tao takes about four hours.
BUS JOINT TICKET: Buses are a good alternative at flights to Samui if you want to reach Koh Tao from Bangkok, but also from Phuket, Krabi or other Thai cities. A flight to Samui International Airport can cost a lot if not booked in advance and in high season seats often sell out quickly. A combo-ticket from Bangkok to Koh Tao that includes the bus and ferry service can cost four times less than a flight ticket in high season. Transit times are, of course, hardly comparable but the inconvenience is well compensated by considerable savings. Since the introduction of overnight lines lines many tourists have opted for bus transfer. VIP no-standing buses equipped with air conditioning and comfortable seats suitable for overnight sleeping provide direct connection between Bangkok and the piers in Chmphon. The trip lasts seven hours up to pier. You can purchase a combo-ticket to Samui, commonly called Joint Ticket, directly to the starting point in Khao San Road or through any travel agent in Bangkok. Lomprayah High Speed Catamaran and Songserm Express Boat offer the service from Bangkok with ferry's departures from Chumphon, more close to the capital, while from other southern seaside resorts uses the Don Sak Pier in Surat Thani.
TRAIN JOINT TICKET: Koh Tao is easily accessible by train from Bangkok thanks to the Southern Line of Thai Railways. All southbound trains stop at the railways station in Chumphon where, once reached the pier, you can continue the journey to Mae Haad on Koh Tao by ferry. The combo-ticket, train plus ferry usually named Joint Ticket, is a a comfortable and economical option to reach the island, and if you opt for the first class you will sleep in a comfortable private cabin with two bunk beds. The night trains towards Chumphon depart from Bangkok Railway Station, unofficially known as Hua Lamphong Station. A Train Joint Ticket to Koh Tao costs from 1,150 to 1,800 THB depending on the class, and it includes the train ticket, the transfer by bus from the railway station until the pier in Chumphon and the speedboat ticket. The train trip lasts eight hours. Tickets can be bought or reserved 60 days in advance, strictly advised as early as possible in the high season, directly to the Hua Lamphong Station or in any travel agencies of Bangkok.
