Koh Samui's Beaches
Located about 500 south of Bangkok, Koh Samui is the main island of Chumphon Archipelago. Despite its proximity to the mainland, only 35 km separate the island from the coast of Surat Thani, Samui until the late-20th century was a self-sufficient island with few connections to the mainland. Practically without roads until the early 1970s, the island's economy was mainly based on fishing and the collection of coconut nuts and rubber. The first foreign backpackers started arriving on Samui in the mid-1970s, when there were few accommodations for tourists and facilities. From the 1980s onwards, in the island have arisen several seaside resorts, with many hotels, guest houses, restaurants and all facilities to please the visitors transforming the island in one of the most popular seaside resorts in all Southeast Asia. Koh Samui boasts many beautiful beaches, all are easily accessible via the coastal road that follows almost the entire perimeter of the island. Chaweng and Lamai are the most popular and crowded, they offer all kinds of accommodation, facilities, seaside activities and a lively nightlife. Others are quieter and less crowded, while offering good facilities, and are suitable for those who want a more relaxing holiday in a tropical semi-deserted beach. To get to Koh Samui you can choose between two travel options, one that provides the use of planes and a more economic that provides the use of the buses or trains, plus the ferries of course. The island has its own international airport with several national connections and a few international flights. Koh Samui International Airport is privately owned and is located about 4 km north of Chaweng. The island is connected to mainland with car ferry and speedboat services throughout the year. Several private companies operate frequent daily departures from 05:00 till 19:00 in the evening, every day of year including holidays. Almost all ferries leave from the piers located along the coast of Don Sak District, 60 km east of Surat Thani centre and about 95 km from the Surat Thani International Airport. Hua Thanon Beach
Hua Thanon is a quiet beach located near a Muslims fishing village on Samui's southestern coast, just south of Lamai Beach. Almost unknown and less frequented than the most famous neighbor, it offers a view of how the island was before the mass tourism. Only a few visitors reach this remote area of the island, mostly are backpackers staying in the few bungalow accommodations avaiable. Instead the Muslims village is well known and appreciated, it is definitely one of best places on the island where you can enjoy fresh seafood at reasonable prices. In the village there is a nice typical fresh market very animated, with some small restaurants and several stalls selling all kind of merchandise, as well as stalls where you can buy fresh fish at very affordable prices.Read More
Ban Khao Beach
Baan Khao Beach is located on the southeastern tip of Koh Samui, about 20 km south of Chaweng Beach. The beach is long more than 2 kilometers but narrow, and boasts beautiful white sand very soft and fine. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, it is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. However, it is not very popular and often semi deserted even in high season, probably due to the considerable distance from the liveliest area of the island. There are anyway some accommodations and restaurants along the coast. Two kilometers north of bay there is the Wat Khunaram, the temple where are preserved the mummified remains of Pordaeng Luong, a revered monk that died more than thirty years ago.Read More
Thong Krut Beach
Thong Krut is a small fishing village in the southernmost tip of Koh Samui, about 23 km south of Chaweng Beach. Due to the muddy bottom, the beach along this stretch of coastline is not very suitable for swimming or bathing activities, however the village worth a visit. You will meet the authentic culture of Muslim fishermen and enjoy excellent fresh fish in the restaurants located along the beach at reasonable prices, admiring the spectacular scenery offered by Koh Tan and Koh Mudsum, the two small islands just in front of the coast. Moored in the bay there are many colorful longtail and fishing boats available to tourists. Choeng Mon Beach
Chaweng Mon Beach is located on the north-eastern tip of Samui, about 8 km north of Chaweng following the road 4171. The beach is spreads into several small coves, and boasts some of the most luxurious and expensive resorts in the island. The secluded location makes this stretch of coastline a quiet corner of Koh Samui suitable for those looking for a relaxing holiday in one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Just opposite to the beach there is the small island of Koh Fan Yai, easily accessible with a kayak or on foot at low tide.
