Thonburi
Thonburi
The majestic Chao Phraya River divides the city into two areas, one to the east, that is the modern Bangkok, and one to the west, the quiet Thonburi. Here was located the capital of Thonburi Kingdom, Anachak Thonburi, the first reign after the reunification of the nation by the general Taksin. The area is a dense residential neighbourhood, with a lot of residences, food markets and small shops serving locals that live, work and study here. The Thonburi side of Bangkok is a maze of streets and canals, Khongs in Thai, which are home to some characteristic floating markets, like Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom. The Southern Bus Terminal Bangkok is also located in the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The terminal is the main departure point for buses and minibuses that run from Bangkok to Southern and Western regions of Thailand, like Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui.
