Chatuchak

Chatuchak, Phahonyothin Road

Chatuchak is one of the fifty districts of Bangkok. It is on the north of the metropolitan area and is easily accessible from every area of the capital thanks to the Skytrain Sukhumvit Line and Subway Blue Line. The district is named after the eponymous public park located in the area, precisely between Phahonyothin Road and Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road. The huge park complex is one of the oldest public parks in Bangkok. It covers 1.13 km² of a former State Railway of Thailand golf course, and consists of Chatuchak Park, Queen Sirikit Park, Wachirabenchathat Park, Suan Rot Fai Garden and the beautiful Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. The complex is commonly used for biking and jogging, there are loop paths around the park of about 3 kilometres, which are completely car free. Picnicking is one of the main attractions; you can rent bamboo mats, bicycles, and buy food at the park's northern and southern ends. Adjacent to the park, in the south, there is the Chatuchak Weekend Market, the district's main attraction. Also known as Jatujak or even JJ, that is the largest market in Thailand and one of the world's largest weekend markets. The world-famous market covers an area of 70 Rai, over 35 hectares, divided into 27 Sections and contains more than 15,000 stalls selling goods from all over the country. It is estimated that every day, on average in a weekend, over than 200,000 visitors come here to browse through the merchandise on offer. 30% of them are tourists. The weekend market is open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 07:00 to 18:00, and on Fridays, namely the Wholesale Day, from 18:00 to 24:00. Jatujak Plaza is the only section of the market that is open every day. Just across the Kamphaeng Phet Road is located the Or Tor Kor Market belonging to The Marketing Organization for Farmers, offering fresh agriculture product and food. The Suan Lum Night Bazaar Ratchada, is another large market in the Chatuchak district. The daily bazar is located on Ratchadapisek Road side by side with Lat Phrao MRT Station, 1.7km east of Chatuchak Park. This big night market was opened in December 2015 to recreate the experience of the original Suan Lum Night Bazaar, which was located next to Lumphini Park in Pathum Wan District and was closed several years ago. Entertainment is at the heart of new Suan Lum Night Bazaar, including Playhouse Cabaret Ladyboy Show, Muay Thai boxing shows, live music, and performances of street artists. More
